The real problem
Familiarity is not the same as recall
While an article is open, its vocabulary and argument are visible. A second pass feels fluent because the sentences are familiar. That feeling does not answer the harder question: can you explain the idea tomorrow without the page? Retrieval practice tests that condition directly.
In experiments with educational prose, Roediger and Karpicke found that repeated study helped on a test only minutes later, while prior free-recall testing produced better retention after longer delays. A broad review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated practice testing and distributed practice as high-utility techniques across many learning conditions; rereading and highlighting received lower general ratings.
The internet can also function as external memory. Research beginning with the so-called Google effect explored whether people remember where information can be found instead of the information itself; later reviews describe a more mixed and context-dependent literature. The useful response is not to reject external storage. Let the system preserve sources and exact details, while your own practice develops the ideas you need to retrieve and apply.

Use all eight for important sources. For ordinary articles, steps four through seven—the recall loop—provide most of the discipline.
Choose what deserves memory
Do not try to retain every page. Before reading deeply, decide whether the material may change a decision, support a project, explain an important idea, or become evidence you will need later. Skim disposable material and reserve the full workflow for the smaller number of sources with future value.
Begin with one question
Turn the title into a question or write the problem that brought you to the page. A question gives attention a job and creates a retrieval cue for later. “What does this article say?” is weak; “Why did this project fail despite growing revenue?” or “Which mechanism explains this result?” is useful.
Read in a clean pass
Remove the obvious interruptions, finish a meaningful section, and delay highlighting until you can state why a passage matters. Constant switching and constant marking make the page feel active without requiring you to build a coherent account of it.
Close the page and retrieve
After a section or a short article, hide the source. On a blank note, write the central claim, three supporting points, and one unresolved question from memory. Sixty honest seconds is more diagnostic than another comfortable reread because it reveals what is actually available without the page in front of you.
Reopen, check, and correct
Compare your reconstruction with the source. Correct errors in a different color or under a “missed” heading. Do not replace your attempt with a polished copied summary; the gap between recall and source is the useful information.
Save a retrieval note, not just a URL
Record the source, your question, the main idea in your words, why it matters, and when you expect to use it. The note should help your future self decide why the source was kept before reopening the entire article.
Turn one idea into a future question
Create one to three prompts that require an answer rather than recognition: “What are the three causes?”, “How is X different from Y?”, or “When would this advice fail?” Questions are compact handles for later retrieval practice.

Explain it in a meeting, connect it to another source, write a paragraph, change a decision, or teach it to someone. The goal is not to preserve the article perfectly. It is to make the useful part available when your work calls for it.

A useful note is not a compressed copy of the article. It records the job the source performs in your thinking. Use this template for material worth keeping:
Question: What was I trying to understand?
Main claim: One sentence, written from memory.
Three supports: The evidence or reasoning that carries the claim.
Connection: What does this confirm, challenge, or extend?
Use: The project, decision, conversation, or date that gives it value.
Recall prompt: A question that cannot be answered by recognizing the title.
Source: URL, author, publication, and exact evidence worth reopening.
Write the main claim before copying quotations. If the note will support published, academic, legal, medical, or financial work, preserve the exact source and verify every quotation and factual claim against it. Memory notes assist thinking; they do not replace evidence.
Self-explanation can deepen the note. Ask how the claim works, why it follows, what assumptions it depends on, and where it might fail. A meta-analysis by Bisra and colleagues found an overall benefit from prompts that induce self-explanation across a range of learning tasks, although results depend on the task and quality of the explanation.

Spacing is not one magic sequence. The useful gap depends on the material, the person, and how long the knowledge must last. Use this lightweight schedule as a starting point:

- Explain the idea and connect it to another source or current project.
- After one month
- Retrieve it again only if it still matters; archive the rest.

- Review the source itself before a decision, citation, meeting, or publication.
Start each review with retrieval, not rereading. If recall is accurate and the idea is already in use, lengthen the interval or stop scheduling it. If it is important and repeatedly missed, shorten the gap and improve the question rather than accumulating more highlights.

Seven common online-reading mistakes
Saving before deciding. A bookmark made at the first interesting sentence often becomes an obligation rather than knowledge. Skim first; promote only useful material into the permanent library.
Highlighting the entire argument. Highlights should identify evidence or turning points. If every paragraph is marked, none has a retrieval job.
Rereading before trying to recall. Rereading restores familiarity and hides the gap you need to diagnose. Attempt first, then check.
Outsourcing the first summary to AI. A generated summary may be convenient, but convenience is not retrieval. Make your own rough reconstruction before using AI to clarify or compare.
Building an elaborate taxonomy. A large folder and tag system can consume the time meant for reading and recall. Use a small inbox, a few stable topics, and strong source notes.
Reviewing every saved item forever. Most pages are references, not memory commitments. Schedule only ideas whose future use justifies the attention.
Losing the original source. A remembered claim without its evidence is risky. Keep the canonical page, author, publication date, and relevant passage attached to the note.
